CLINICAL/THERAPEUTIC SERVICES
Program Objectives:
Clincial/Therapeutic services are provided to individuals from infancy to adulthood in an outpatient clinic setting as well as to those enrolled in other programs of the Agency. The goals of these services are to maximize overall level of functioning and to remediate specific skill deficits as needed.
Program Description:
Occupational Therapy – Occupational Therapy focuses on all areas of self-help skills, fine-hand dexterity, understanding manual tasks, and carrying them to completion. The Occupational Therapist treats children with developmental delays, as well as adults who have suffered strokes, head traumas or sustained debilitating hand injuries.
Physical Therapy – Physical Therapy uses special handling techniques to help each individual achieve the highest level of gross motor functioning possible. By emphasizing proper body alignment, optimal muscle functioning and by designing and securing assistive devices as they are needed, the Physical Therapists can allow individuals more normal motor performance.
Speech Therapy – Speech Therapy focuses on providing children and adults with a viable means of communication. Treatment of articulation, fluency, voice, feeding, and language disorders as well as associated disorders such as hearing loss, neurological impairment, or mental retardation are offered by the Agency’s Speech Pathologists. Whether it be through improved speech or via sign language, picture and word board, or voice synthesizer, achieving the highest level of language functioning is the vital goal of the department.
Assistive Technology Services – The Assistive Technology Program is available to children and adults with a variety of physical or developmental disabilities and/or sensory impairments. Individuals with mild impairments, as well as those with multiple disabilities, may benefit from the program. The Agency provides evaluations of augmentative/alternative communication, assistive listening devices, computer technology, adaptive seating, positioning and mobility, and other custom equipment including environmental control and adaptive toys. The goal of Assistive Technology is to enhance the independent functioning of individuals with disabilities in home, school, work and leisure activities through the selection, acquisition and use of assistive technology services and devices.
Psychology – Psychological services include assessment in overall development, learning, cognitive functioning, personality and social/emotional functioning. Psychologists also provide counseling to children and adults and/or their families. The psychology staff consult with other professionals to assist them in working more effectively with specific individuals.
Social Services – Social workers provide group and individual counseling for children and adults in order to meet the special needs of both individuals and families. The social worker assists with coordination of therapy programs, referral of other appropriate services, and educational and training services for parents.
